2017 Resolution: Explore Duke Forest

One of my goals for the new year is to further explore the many trails of the Duke Forest. Taking advantage of the very rare snowfall in Durham, my roommate and I went on a snowy hike in the Korstian Division this weekend. One of my favorite hikes in the forest, we started at Duke Forest Gate 26 and did a loop on the Rhododendron Bluffs Trail, along the south bank of New Hope Creek, and back up the Laurel Hill Trail. For those who haven’t been to Duke Forest yet, you can order a map for the best information on gate locations and hiking spots (or just ask a Nic Schooler about their favorite area. Second-years and PhD students know all).

The Duke Forest is both a recreational site as well as a teaching laboratory, and on several trails, many of which leave from campus and others that are just a 5-10 minute drive away, you’ll come across ongoing studies on tree regeneration, fire burns and more. With more than 7,000 acres in its boundaries, I’m excited to add many more favorite trails to my list.
