Several years ago Sochi committed to following stringent environmental standards for the Winter Olympics, including carbon neutrality and zero-waste. Organizers planned to achieve this goal through investments in renewable energy facilities, energy-efficient infrastructure, and carbon offsetting. While this objective offered a chance to improve the country&#8217;s environmental image, it achieved mixed results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-574\" alt=\"photo 1\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11-1024x613.jpg\" width=\"442\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11-1024x613.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11-200x119.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11-500x299.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.nicholas.duke.edu\/fuelforthought\/files\/2014\/02\/photo-11.jpg 1608w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ramping Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s energy use consists of 90% fossil fuels (mostly natural gas) and 10% renewables (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/countries\/cab.cfm?fips=RS\" target=\"_blank\">US EIA, 2011<\/a>). The two major thermal power stations built to provide electricity for the Olympic games, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enviro-news.com\/news\/key-sochi-olympics-power-plant-opens.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dzhubginsky power plant<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ogk2.ru\/eng\/about\/branch\/adlerskaya\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adlerskaya power plant<\/a>, are powered by natural gas. These power plants offer improved efficiency and environmental standards than older plants. Existing thermal power plants and hydroelectric plants also received renovations. Distanced from major pipelines and transmission lines, Sochi constructed a new power grid that would bring 8 times more electricity to the city, generated by the dozens of new energy projects launched for the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Other energy projects include generating <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.marketwatch.com\/energy-ticker\/2014\/02\/07\/solar-power-shines-at-winter-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\">wind and solar energy<\/a> at Olympic facilities and new public transportation stations, offsetting greenhouse gas emissions from the energy used by facilities and travelers, and constructing energy-efficient Olympic infrastructure. One of the milestones of this year&#8217;s Olympics is Russia&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/news\/sochi-2014-promoting-sustainable-development-in-russia\/223083\" target=\"_blank\">first national environmental standard for green construction<\/a>, which was applied to the construction of Olympic facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Descent from Environmental Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although Dow has sponsored carbon offsets for carbon dioxide emissions directly related to the games, some argue it is <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/02\/03\/russia-olympics-carbon-neutral\/\" target=\"_blank\">challenging to estimate the total emissions<\/a> tied to the Olympics. \u00a0Moreover, the <a href=\"http:\/\/science.time.com\/2014\/01\/30\/sochi-winter-olympics-environmental-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\">goal of zero waste will not be met<\/a>, the most flagrant reason being the illegal dumping of construction waste. Environmental scientists and activists have also been shunned regarding their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/02\/09\/the_sochi_scandal_no_ones_talking_about_how_russia_is_silencing_its_environmentalists\/\" target=\"_blank\">concerns for ecosystems<\/a> affected by construction of the Olympic facilities, roadways, and railways. Massive spending, exceeding the combined sum of all previous Winter Olympic budgets, also relates to the environmental evaluation of the Olympics. A portion of the extra spending came from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mintek.com\/blog\/eam-cmms\/facilities-transportation-infrastructure-sochi-olympic-games\/\" target=\"_blank\">construction projects that needed to be redone<\/a>, wasting materials and energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the score is&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check out some of the numbers related to energy and the environment at the thermal power station.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/energy\/2014\/02\/140207-sochi-olympics-energy-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\">49<\/a> Number of major energy projects initiated, according to Energy Minister Alexander Novak.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2014-01-02\/the-2014-winter-olympics-in-sochi-cost-51-billion\" target=\"_blank\">51<\/a>\u00a0Cost in billions of US dollars of the Sochi Winter Olympics, exceeding the initial budget by dozens of billions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/countries\/cab.cfm?fips=rs\" target=\"_blank\">56<\/a> Percent of Russia&#8217;s energy consumption that is natural gas.<\/p>\n<p><a of the loftiest Olympic environmental goals will hopefully help the International Olympic Committee in its choice of future candidate cities and help\u00a0future Olympic organizers in their long-term
