More on the LEAF here

On Saturday, the Nicholas School will honor Sayles for his Lifetime Environmental Achievement in the Fine Arts (LEAF), an award established in 2009 to recognize “an artist whose work has lifted the human spirit by conveying our profound spiritual and material connection to the Earth, thereby inspiring others to help forge a more sustainable future for all.”

Sayles, “a consummate storyteller” who has received many an award for his work, which includes Matewan (1987), about an early 20th century coal-mining fight, and Sunshine State (2002), about a coastal community in Florida, was chosen for having crafted a body of work whose themes, as I wrote in February, profoundly tie into “the environment and …  humanity’s … connection to the natural world.”

There’s more info on Sayles and his work vis-à-vis the environment in my post here. If you’re in the Durham area tomorrow and want to attend the ceremony, it is free and open to the public. Get the details. For everyone else, check back to this page for video of the ceremony, which will be available sometime next week.
