Gina McCarthy
Media reports suggest that Gina McCarthy will likely be Obama’s next pick to head EPA. Here’s a look at what she has said about climate and what others have said about her and her track record. (EPA)

A continuing series on what folks in the public sphere
have been saying about climate change over the past week.

With Lisa Jackson’s official departure from the Environmental Protection Agency last Thursday, President Obama is reportedly homing in on her replacement. Rumor has it that Gina McCarthy, currently EPA’s assistant administrator for air and radiation, will be the next EPA chief. (See herehere and here.) Here are some of the things that were said by and of her recently around the issue of global warming and her track record.

“We’re going to drive the nation into doing what it has to do about climate change. Times have changed, and we have to get the hint.”

Gina McCarthy, Obama’s rumored pick for EPA head

“Gina’s made an effort to reach out to industries while they’re developing regulations. She has a good reputation.”

Charles Warren, EPA official in the Reagan administration

“She’s a pragmatic policymaker… She has aspirational environmental goals, but she accepts real-world economics.”

Gloria Berquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers

“The administration should be looking for someone who will end the standard of ignoring congressional requests, undermining transparency and relying on flawed science. Instead, it looks like they may double down on that practice.”

— Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), in a statement from last week on possible McCarthy nomination
